I have many friends, all of whom have many different interpretations and celebrations of this wonderful occasion – Christmas.
Some see the reason for the season as drinking, making merry, and parties…
A chance to receive or demand gifts
Go shopping… more sales lah
Sit on Santa’s lap
Got public holiday? – Go for holiday!
Simply a time to get together with friends, people you love or people who love you
So what is Christmas? Is it decorative or religious?
Let’s say you were an alien (aliens reading my blog – COOL!), and had no idea what this human social convention of Christmas meant.
This is Wikipedia’s objective explanation of Christmas
“Christmas or Christmas Day is a holiday observed generally on December 25 to commemorate the birth of Jesus, the central figure of Christianity. The date is not known to be the actual birthday of Jesus, and may have initially been chosen to correspond with either the day exactly nine months after some early Christians believed Jesus had been conceived, the date of the Roman winter solstice, or one of various ancient winter festivals.”
“However, today, whether or not the birth date of Jesus is on December 25 is not considered to be an important issue in mainstream Christian denominations; rather, celebrating the coming of God into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity is considered to be the primary meaning of Christmas.”
“Although nominally a Christian holiday, Christmas is also celebrated by an increasing number of non-Christians worldwide, and many of its popular celebratory customs have pre-Christian or secular themes and origins. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music, an exchange of greeting cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly.”
This is my spirit of Christmas
What Christmas means to me, is that it means the world to me.
Although I wish I could celebrate it somewhere watching snowflakes trickle past my windowsill while I sit by a fireplace in pyjamas and socks hugging a warm cup of milo – it is still uncontestedly my favorite time of the year.
I believe Christmas is one of the biggest annual economic stimulus around the world.
I believe Santa is not real, and whoever has been eating those milk and cookies I have been leaving for him over the years is someone in the house who is getting very fat and greedy!
I believe that the whole ‘standing under the mistletoe’ thing may not work.
I believe that this is a season not to receive, but to give.
I BELIEVE THAT THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS IS LOVE, GRACE AND MERCY, GRATEFULNESS AND CELEBRATIONS. Jesus loved us so much that he died for our sins when we were supposed to be punished (that is grace and mercy). We thank the Lord for everything he’s done (which is ALOT), and we celebrate that he died for us and came back alive.
CHRISTMAS IS LOVE… CHRISTMAS IS SALVATION. CHRISTMAS IS A CELEBRATION!
So go out and celebrate. 🙂 What does Christmas mean to you?
The Church I attend, New Creation Church, has the most amazing Christmas celebrations every year.
The Christmas service celebrations are held at Suntec City Carrefour Tower 5, level 3 (next to Eng Wah Cinema).
Look for the celebration helpers in a huge auditorium named “The Rock” – if there is a full house you can sit in rooms on the other levels as well. (It gets really packed – come early!)
Choose between various timings – happening this Sunday, 26 Dec, 8AM, 11AM, 2PM AND 5PM.
(I think I am going for the 11am service… email@example.com)
I will be more than happy if you would like to come and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas with me!
